Palm reading guide

The life line

The life line curves around the base of the thumb. Despite its name, in modern palmistry it isn't read for how long anyone lives. It's read for energy and pace: how you spend yourself, how you recharge, and how you meet big changes.

Where to find it

Look for the line that starts at the edge of the palm between the thumb and index finger and sweeps down in an arc around the fleshy base of the thumb, toward the wrist. On many hands it begins close to, or joined with, the head line.

What it doesn't mean

A short or broken life line is one of the most common worries people bring to palmistry, and it's worth saying plainly: the length of the line says nothing about the length of a life. Readers who use the tradition today treat it as a picture of energy and style, never as a timeline.

What readers look at

A wide, generous curve that swings out into the palm is often read as an outgoing, energetic person who enjoys being on the move and among people. A line that hugs the thumb closely is read as a more reserved pace, someone who prefers a smaller circle and recharges with quiet.

A deep, clear line is read as steady energy; a fainter one as energy that comes and goes with mood and season. Breaks or a second line running alongside are often read as times of change: a move, a new chapter, or a different way of living.

Both hands and the lines nearby

As with the other lines, readers often compare both hands: a different curve on each is read as the difference between your natural pace and the one your days currently ask of you.

The mount of Venus, the soft pad inside the curve, is usually read alongside the life line. A full, rounded mount next to a wide curve is read as warmth and enjoyment of life going together.

Reading it for yourself

Use the life line to ask how you like to spend your energy. Are you most yourself when you're busy and out in the world, or when you've had time to rest? What gives you energy back? Those answers change, and noticing them is the point.

In Polarfate, the life line is paired with the Moon and the Mood card.
