Hand shapes: earth, air, fire and water

Before reading any line, many palmists look at the shape of the whole hand. A common system sorts hands into four types named after the elements: earth, air, fire and water. The shape gives the background colour for everything else in the reading.

How to tell your hand's shape

Look at two things: the palm, and the fingers. Is your palm closer to a square, about as wide as it is long, or a rectangle, longer than it is wide? Are your fingers short compared with the palm, or long? Those two answers point to one of the four types.

The four types

Earth hand: a square palm with shorter fingers. Read as practical, steady and down to earth, someone who likes to make and fix things and values reliability.

Air hand: a square palm with longer fingers. Read as curious, sociable and quick-thinking, someone who loves ideas, conversation and learning.

Fire hand: a longer, rectangular palm with shorter fingers. Read as energetic, spontaneous and bold, someone who acts on enthusiasm and enjoys a challenge.

Water hand: a longer palm with long, slender fingers. Read as sensitive, imaginative and intuitive, someone who feels deeply and notices the mood of a room.

Fingers and thumb

Beyond length, readers notice the fingers themselves. Smooth fingers are often read as acting on instinct; fingers with noticeable knuckles as someone who likes to think things over first.

The thumb gets its own attention. A long, firm thumb is read as determination; a flexible one that bends back easily as an adaptable, easygoing nature.

Mixed hands

Many hands don't fit neatly into one type, and that's normal. Readers often describe a hand as mostly one element with a touch of another, an earth hand with air fingers, say, which is read as a practical person with a curious streak.

Hand shape and the zodiac

The same four elements group the zodiac signs, so some people enjoy comparing their hand's element with their sun sign's. They don't have to match. When they differ, it can be an interesting prompt: which side of you does each one describe?

In Polarfate, your hand's element is part of your Palm Blueprint, kept from your scan.
